Hey, sorry for taking so long to reply! I blow up the pixel art in potatoshop using Image > Image size... with the interpolation set to 'nearest neighbour.' For this one I basically just scanned in some calico in high-res. Then I just placed it as a smart object on top of the pixel art setting its blending mode to multiply.

Hope that helps, my friend, and thanks for the kind words!

Oh thankyou! It's actually a piece of calico I scanned in. :)

the paper effect works very nicely here, I was just wondering why you decided to make the lighting/shading from the center of the image because it was an interesting choice. And, the building was a really nice addition to the landscape, maybe a few smaller ones would compliment the picture even more =)

At first they were separate pictures. But then I wondered what it'd look like if I joined them together. And then I discovered it created some interesting lighting. So it was a lucky mistake. :) It might not be the most realistic lighting, but then it is pixel art. Hehe....

I'm currently plying around with little cities at the moment. Might not change this picture, but it's a good suggestion.

Thanks for the great comment! And hope you had a merry christmas! Ho, ho, ho....

Uh oh, you're going to start getting me excited about making a game again...

I was just thinking again about trying a new mechanic for the climbing game. Argh, too many ideas! =p
